Ward 1, Electoral Subdivision 3 By-Election - October 17, 2011
School boards play a vital role in the education of our children. Boards make decisions about how education is delivered locally and directly impact the development of children and our community as a whole. The October 17th, 2011 school board by-election is a great opportunity for citizens to get involved in public education – by voting or running as a candidate for school trustee.
The Alberta School Boards Association provides useful information for candidates on their website:
Becoming A Trustee
a
School board trustees are crucial links between schools and the provincial government. Trustees work hard to lobby the government to provide more funding and opportunities for our most important resource: our children. Elected school boards ensure the community has a say in what children learn. Trustees also provide guidance for the jurisdiction in which they work, setting goals, developing polices and planning for the jurisdiction as a whole.
As this position is essential to education in Alberta, school divisions across the province are working hard to promote the election and encourage individuals to put their names forward as candidates. To that end, the Alberta School Boards' Association has prepared a number of resources for individuals who may be interested in running in the Fall election. Information includes a brochure on becoming a school trustee, the role of trustees, the trustee code of ethics and a web-based session of questions to consider for those thinking about running.
